About the Project
For this project we are created a system of hardware and software libraries to safely interact with a prototype active suspension system. Many past groups have interacted with the base system and have attempted creating control systems for the project. We approached this project from a different angle and identified many safety issues with the system and addressed them in the project. By the end of the semester, we were able to develop safety measures to ensure the hardware can be controlled safely, and also provided functional libraries to help future groups easily interact with the system of power electronics and sensors.
The most common use for a suspension system would be in an automobile between its axles and chassis. The system allows passengers to ride in comfort despite driving on any rough terrain. An active suspension system, however, replaces the more traditional spring-damper system with an electronic actuator. Any vertical displacement due to external disturbances such as bumps in a road will be attenuated. Using this system, drivers can experience a much smoother ride and achieve better vehicle handling when compared to a traditional spring-damper system.
This system could also be integrated into heavy equipment in the mining or agriculture fields as well. Vehicles in taxing environments require a different type of suspension system build around a vehicle's cab or even the operator's seat. When dealing with heavy machinery, it is much easier to control the movement of these smaller components than the entire chassis of the vehicle. Our active suspension system would prove to be a valuable asset in these environments as well.
