MP3 Codec
by Brad Erwin and Mary Lou Kesse Advisors: Dr. I. S. Ahn and Dr. T. L. Stewart This project is a study in data compression, specifically the MPEG I
Layer III algorithms. The first phase of the project explored elementary
signal processing and compression encoding and decoding techniques using
MATLAB. Following this, most of the MPEG decoding scheme was coded in ANSI-C
and cross-compiled into assembly for the Texas Instruments C6xDSP processor
in phase two. Finally, phase three completed a manufacturing feasibility
study on the project with direct comparison to the Diamond Multimedia Rio
MP3 decoder which is currently on the market. The whole project was intended
to take a concept through the steps of becoming a worthwhile product for
sale.
