Oxygen Lance Positioning System
Ian Marshall and Doug Pierce
Advisor: Dr. Brian Huggins
The purpose of this project is to design a microwave based positioning
system for use on an oxygen lance in an electrical arc furnace. The focus
of this project is to determine the distance between the lance tip and
the molten steel bath. This is to be accomplished using the lance as the
waveguide, and developing hardware and software that will translate the
reflected microwave signal into a distance from the steel bath. This distance
measurement will allow optimization of the oxygen lance, which will speed
the melting process and reduce the risk of costly lance damage. Keystone
Steel and Wire funded this project.
