Extending the Tracking Range of a Phase-Locked Loop with an Artificial Neural Network
Nathan Alt and Brad Olson
Advisor: Dr. Gary Dempsey

A common device used in today's complex electronic systems is the phase-locked loop. The applications range from radio and television to complex signal reconstruction and satellite communication. However, the phase-locked loop's design has limited it to a specific operating (tracking) range. The goal of this project is to extend the tracking range of a classical phase-locked loop. Our strategy involves the use of an artificial neural network to extend the linear characteristics of a phase-locked loop. A single-chip microcontroller will be used to implement the neural network. Our objective, with the aid of the artificial neural network, is to double the tracking range of a phase-locked loop.
