Neural Network Implementation of A Phase-Lock Loop
by
Jeff Alig and David Redfield
Advisor: Dr. Gary Dempsey

Artificial neural network's industrial applicability is being increasingly realized worldwide. Applications that are not well suited for digital computer algorithms are excellent candidates for neural network implementation. These application exist in the areas of controls, pattern recognition, signal processing, image processing, data compression, and other decision making problems. In this project, we have designed a neural network, using the backpropagation algorithm, to perform the exclusive OR function. This network can be used to replace the phase detector in a phase-lock loop to increase the lock and capture ranges. Also, we have designed and implemented two discrete component phase lock loops that will be used as a benchmark to test the performance of the neural network approach.
